Dorkly: X-men First Class

Been really busy looking over the Unreal engine and dealing with some finals lately, but here's something to keep folks entertained a bit...

Carls Lock Of The Century: Bengeas vs. Ravens

The First Hurdle!

Went to download Ultra Edit onto the new rig, and wouldn't you know it...they've become so successful that I can't just ask for my lifetime update copy by entering my email and verifying myself as a registered user.  Oh well, I fired off an email to the company asking about it and hope to hear from them tomorrow.  Shouldn't be a problem since I registered for the thing when they were JUST starting out back at the turn of the century. (hehe that sounds like a looong time in hindsight, despite being true).  Surely they have records of the old timers that got them going!

Also, going to look into reversing the order of posts in the blog here, since it would be easier for someone reading along to start at the top and work down threw newer posts, than to start at an old post, read down, then scroll up to read the next downward and so on.

UDK Project!

Well, the room-mate has been trying to use the Unreal Development Kit in order to incorporate top down models for his table top gaming adventures.  As such I'm going to try starting a project in the same vein and hopefully simultaneously create a step by step guide along the way.

Now the first step is obviously to download the most recent version of the UDK, but while that's happening I'm also going to make sure I have my text editor up to speed.  As it happens, I have a registered copy of Ultra Edit, so I'm going to make sure it's up to date as well before getting started.  Though to be honest, it probably doesn't need to be to just edit code.  I just like it because it was originally free I believe, or extremely inexpensive at the time of purchase about 10 years ago.  Give it a try if you need a simple editor.

Yahtzee: Battle Field 3 (offline experience)

Most of the FPS coming out these days rely on the fact that online play is why people are buying, but they still include the offline single player experience in order to boost the initial buy in.

Honestly, if they offered offline only via an ala cart model, they might not make as much money considering they would then have SOME people buying exclusively for offline at the lower model. In fact, they probably just throw in the offline experience as an add on really. As for me, I only play the offline content when the server is down, and on easy mode so I can no-brain through it just to see the story, but for those that DO enjoy the single player experience, here's Yahtzee's review of things....

...and an example of people putting their own names in at the character name screen... ;)

Yahtzee: Resistance 3

OK, so first off a GNFY warning...aka GINA, NOT FOR YOU!...

Ya see Gina likes the humor here, but not the industry jargon, so this isn't for her.  For those of you interested in Yahtzee's opinion of Resistance 3 ....  while most likely playing Gears 3... I present the following...

Dorkly: Remember Double Dragon?

My 100th post, and I'm taking it back to the old arcade classic "Double Dragon".  Ahh yes, if you thought it was awkward helping your brother to save his girlfriend only to have an epic battle with him at the end to steal his girlfriend as your own, you probably had no problem with beating every type of villain along the way...

Dorkly: Mario Luigi Same Clothes!

What if Luigi "accidentally" showed up in blue and red?.....

Yahtzee review: Deus Ex Revolution

Some thoughts on the latest Deus Ex game from Yahtzee. As for me, I'm intrigued considering how intense the original seemed at the time. Going back to it now it seems so much less that I remembered. Sad face :(

Extra Credits: National Bill

Regarding the national bill proposed to be law regarding what you can and can not do with gaming material.   ie: game-play commentary etc.  As for me, games are meant to be played.  Presenting your game-play experience is yours.

Game companies sell an individual the right to interact with what they have developed...they did not sell nor license the results of what someone participating in the experience uncovers.

Putting game-play in the same group as movie or radio experience, aka passive/receptive experience, would be an error.  Game-play is NOT, repeat...NOT the same as witnessing what was intended to be a story (Story though a game may be).

What gaming is, IS the act of interaction and the responses driven from the input of the gamer.

A gamer should not be, nor should ever be, prohibited from sharing that gamer's own personal gaming experience based on that gamer's decisions and actions causing a result, within that gamer's experience, during the course of natural game play by said gamer.

In other words, while movies and cinema-graphic compilations are uniquely one way, gaming experiences are entirely dependent on reactions from the target audience.  As such each potential end result, no matter how limited by potential outcomes by the developer, is completely and entirely dependent on the interaction of each individual participating in the interactive medium.

Thus, each participant's involvement in the gaming experience reflects a unique experience of the game-play possible, and is entirely the property of the person preforming said experience.

Having said that....comment on your opinion!!!!

In the mean time, What EC thinks about it in short...

Dorkly: Captain America

With The new movie coming out this weekend, I thought it fitting to remember exactly what kind of man Captain America was....a druggie!

Extra Credits: Game Award Show

If you've seen the Spike TV award show, you realize that it's little more than one continuous ad for upcoming games.  This really turned me off the first year they had it as I was highly anticipating an actual award show.  However, actual award shows DO exist out there, and it's the subject of discussion in this weeks E.C.

Bank Forclosure! Not What You Think!

So the wheels have been turned on the lending institutions who practice less than scrupulous tactics.  The standard defense that "it's legal", does not mean that it's morally right [see: slavery].

Yahtzee: L.A. Noire

I hear a lot of good things about this game from others playing it, I've been a bit busy myself.
But here's what Yahtzee had to say about it...

Matinee Decision

Thinking of catching an afternoon show but I'm torn.  They both look funny in their own way....but I think one of them will be less likely to be remembered when it rolls onto DVD so I might forget to watch it....hmm, OK then.

Instead of Kung Fu Panda 2....I'll be trying to slip out to see the Will Ferrell flick...

Extra Credits: PSN And Security Issues

Here's a little take on the security problems Sony had last month when its user's credit card information was hacked.

Didn't effect me since I use time cards available through my affiliate banners above and below, but still the responses by Sony were kind of silly I thought, and the E.C. Crew agrees...

Yahtzee: Brink

So the roommate comes back from Gameworks with a copy of Brink, ...used.  First red flag as it had only been out for the weekend.  Anyway he pops it in and things look pretty good as far as character building goes, but then the realization that it's primarily clothes and tattoos sinks in, and you're forced to actually get into the game.  The next day, it found its way back to Gameworks, and tonight I got to nod in agreement as Yahtzee gave his opinion on the subject...

New Movie: Pirates Of The Carribean

Recent Release: Priest

Went out and saw Priest this weekend and thought it fairly decent as vampire movies go.  Here's a clip if some of you have seen the TV spots and are wondering if it's truly worth seeing.  I recommend a matinĂ©e to be honest, and definitely in 2D because many of the scenes are pretty dark in the first place.  Watching through 3D glasses would make it even harder to determine details.

Pokemon Again!?

I didn't realize another Pokemon was out...or that there were over 600 of those little buggers now!  Thanks to "Yahtzee" for giving me the low down on what to expect if I try catching them all again!

Oh! Some of you may not have seen the link to the Extra Credit's innovation award in gaming, so I'm posting it again here!  You don't actually "log in" to anything, the name of the company hosting the award show is "Login".

There was always something about Bioware that I liked,...and something I didn't.  Maybe our good friend "Yahtzee" can sum it up in his weekly installment....

Listen Up Educators!

It's high time you started thinking of new ways to do things!  If students can learn as much from watching a week long documentary series, as you can teach in a semester, then let that be the grading point, and let them fill the rest of time as they wish.

Stop demanding that the time put in is what qualifies the education!  And employers, computers were meant to make working easier for the same amount of money, not more efficient so you could get more work out of someone for the same pay!  I'm sick of people doing more, but getting less just because it's "easier".

Anyways, on a somewhat related note: Gamification.  And don't you DARE demean the output simply because it's not such a grind as it once was!

I haven't posted it here yet, but if anyone is interested in a rocking good time, come check out the mustache massacre at Chaser's this Saturday from 8PM till close...show up with a mustache of some sort, be it real, stencil, or artificial, and get in for free! Four bands, including The Strand will be rocking the night for ya! I look forward to seeing you guys there!

From The Online Gaming Group Of Full Frontal Nerdity

I don't know why I put so much effort into the title whenever I put a FFN post up...after all, I can't embed their image despite my desire to do so...I put links in too!  Anyways, check out their link for their latest ....Full Frontal Nerdity. It's always a blast...this time all about minecraft, the perpetual alpha test version of a game that is still sweeping the internet.

How it Should Have Ended

The guys over at How It should Have Ended Always have good stuff.  Check them out!

Where Does The Time Go?

Why does the spring always seem to get me going in thirty different directions at once?
Spring training has begun, March madness is ongoing, my allergies start acting up, temperature and pressure changes send me into almost daily ick.  But enough about that, I will endeavorer to continue, in a  repetitive, over and over again kind of way, to insure the good gaming information gets out there.  To that end, the latest installment from the guys over at  Extra Credits.

In The Works...

Finishing up two new WOW movies from Black Rock Decent and Twighlight highland. The guild is running crazy through those two areas lately so I have a lot of footage. I just started getting back on my feet this week, but still have lingering ailments, so I'm not as energetic as I normally would be about bringing new content.

But since I love what these guys are talking about every week, another installment of Extra Credits!

Still Not Well...

I've been so bedridden the last week, that when I got to the couch to play games I still said, "meh...I'd rather be sleeping"!...but hey, that doesn't mean I'm not going to share some wisdom with you guys!....So this week per usual, here's the gang over at Extra Credits laying down some insight!

Not Well

I've been fighting a bit of an infection lately so haven't really updated like I would have liked.  I have some footage of RTA taking down Halfus again, with a different drake set up, and two different methods for dealing with the twin dragons.  I'm sure I'll get something up this weekend.

Yahtzee's Take On DC Universe

So I'm running around on Rift, testing the beta looking for game errors and bugs, while another buddy of mine just finished up his beta of DC Universe which launched recently.

I liked it, for what it was, but here's Yahtzee's take on it for grins and giggles.  Check him out over at escapist.

Game Achievements And You!

You know what you can get with all the game achievements you've unlocked playing the X-Box or PlayStation right?  You guessed it, a single byte of information representing how much you've played games!  But hey, don't take my word for it...

Table Top Dice Night II

Once again I'm off to play some table top games....a D&D based adventure is ongoing, however the group over at Full Frontal Nerdity are still going strong in their own campaign!
This week they deal with the aftermath of a Farmville-turned table top adventure gone awry!

New Rig, New Movies!

Here we have the guild downing Halfus Wyrmbreaker in Twilight Bastion!  I like the graphics, but could probably use some advice on alternate movie editors.  Anyone have any thoughts?
Also, I'm looking for options on a new microphone, preferably with pop-guard for the new rig as well.  I'd appreciate input on that as well if anyone has any.

Table Top Dice Night

Going out to play some table top with the gang tonight.  We'll see if the group can overcome the misadventures before us!  If you haven't checked out Full Frontal Nerdity by Aaron Williams yet, and you enjoy the humor that arises from when these types of groups get together, you'll definitely appreciate the humor.
